Weekend in London

Posted by Eddo on March 23, 2013

For some reason travel has lodged itself in my blood, the exploration of places and countries outside the place where I live fascinate me. Usually these explorations take me across rugged countries, such as New Zealand or Iceland, and experience the solitude, but also companionship with other travellers. However, on my most recent travels I have been spending a weekend on my own in one the busiest European capitals, London.

The plan was to both experience this city in the winter, and meet up with a friend. The last time we’ve seen each other was on the other side of the planet, on a rainy morning in Dunedin (NZ), where we said goodbye after spending about three days cycling on the

Otago Central Rail Trail. To get myself acquainted with London I got persuaded purchasing a 48-hour ticket for a guided bus tour around London; the actual hop-pn-hop-off tour takes only about one to two hours, but this ticket allowed me to use it for 48 hours :). It’s a good way on getting around the city, and takes you from one tourist highlight to the next. But don’t worry, have been spending quite some time exploring the city on foot :). On sunday night, outside the Tower of London, I met up with Dominic. We have been keeping in contact over the years via Facebook and twitter, though hadn’t visited his hometown in the years since our cycle tours in New Zealand. With a few stops in between on the south bank of the Thames for a pint and a bit of dinner we ended up in a pub near Piccadilly Circus. It was good to catch up with him again, and although it was three years ago I was still curious about his further travels in NZ after Dunedin. If you guessed that the main topic of the entire evening was cycle touring, then you were indeed quite correct. I do know that I will be visiting London in the next years more often, and I’ve also committed myself to visiting more European capitals over the coming years. One top tip: visit the musea in London, practically all of them have free admittance.
