Magic memories from a cycle tour

Groceries bought from a local store were quickly stowed away, and again we were on our bikes heading further along this trip. Outside the village the bicycle path merged with a twisty and narrow B-road where cars were flying past. Not the place you’d like to be as a cyclist. Fortunately for us, after a few minutes a by-road emerged, probably used by farmers. However, this by-road kept moving further and further away from the B-road, and we knew that the latter would lead us to the next village. We had no idea where the by-road would lead to, as we could not find it on the map. With some adventurous sense, we decided to keep on following the path less traveled, leading us into a forest.

Within the forest, the road turned into a wide trail, narrowing with each pedal stroke. Resulting in a barely rideable path over dead tree trunks and decaying leaves. Our hopes went up when we identified signage displaying a network of trails/paths in the forest, showing us a way out in the right direction. We didn’t know that moments later the path would lead uphill in such an inclination and surface that it merely wasn’t rideable, and we had to push our bikes one at a time up the hill. Hardships usually have rewards, and ours included magical sunlight (nearing sunset) through the green leaves of forest trees and shrubbery.

Here we found ourselves back again on gravel trails, and identified the signs in the direction of our planned campsite for that night. One last hurdle, with a setting sun on the other side of the hill, was a descent on a muddy trail crossing an apple yard. The mud went over our ears, flung by the tires having and loosing grip in the mud. Not that it mattered, we were on our way to a campsite that was supposed to have warm showers.
